It’s rare to find a beach break offering very long rides, and in fact they are often characterised by average waves and closeouts, but they can be excellent, and there are many world-famous, world-class beach breaks, among them Puerto Escondido in Mexico, Supertubos in Portugal, and the beach breaks of Hossegor, France. The vast majority of commonly surfed waves in England and Wales are beach breaks.
For intermediate or advanced surfers, point breaks can be great places to perfect manoeuvres and improve style due to their length and relative predictability, but they are also a test of a surfer’s ability to “read” a wave’s pace, and to link numerous turns together with flow and precision. Both Fanning and Joel Parkinson, reared on the long right-handers of Australia’s Gold Coast, are point break virtuosos, but the great master is Californian Tom Curren, whose performances at J-Bay are legendary.
